Gymnasium in Bernapark Stettlen

Plug and Play

NUSSLI

The gymnasium in Bernapark Stettlen is based on the tried-and-tested supporting structure of bars and connections. Particularly noteworthy is the foundation-free construction, which enables a completely reversible design; a “plug and play” system similar to building blocks that can be dismantled and used elsewhere.

And all according to Baspo standards.

Context

The Bern and Biel School of Design has been based in Bernapark since summer 2024 and will remain here until at least 2034, while the main building on Bern’s Schänzlihalde is being extensively renovated.

The former Deisswil cardboard factory with its characteristic industrial character creates an inspiring environment for creative training. In addition to the existing studios, workshops and a photo lab, the campus now also includes a new sports hall.

The new “Turnhalle im Bernapark Stettlen” offers ideal conditions for temporary use for around ten years. NUSSLI built the hall within a few weeks, and did so sustainably.

Equipment

The new building meets all the requirements of a modern school sports facility. The sports hall has a high-quality, pollutant-free hall floor and light-colored wood cladding, which together create a pleasant indoor climate. The timber construction also regulates humidity in a natural way.

The ancillary rooms are housed in prefabricated modules that have already been delivered fully equipped (modular system). These include the changing rooms with showers, sanitary facilities and other functional rooms. All technical equipment was also already integrated into the modules.

Cycle instead of temporary solution

The gymnasium in Bernapark Stettlen impressively demonstrates the principles of the circular economy in the construction industry. All building materials used are designed for dismantling and reuse. When selecting the materials, the highest demands were placed on environmental and health compatibility, which is why pollutant-free materials are used throughout.

Thanks to the foundation-free construction, only minimal intervention in the building ground was necessary, allowing the area to be returned without a trace after dismantling. The modular design not only allows flexible adaptation during the period of use, but also easy dismantling at the end of the service life.

The gymnasium in Bernapark Stettlen proves that temporary buildings do not necessarily have to be makeshift, but can be user-friendly architecture that is of course also committed to sustainability.

The combination of rapid realization, high quality of use and consistent sustainability makes the project a reference project.
