Noorderparkbad in Amsterdam
Curtains up!
Acting like a warm blanket, the secondary functions are wrapped around the three halls of Noorderparkbad.

Pavilion in the park
The swimÂming pool NoorÂderÂparkbad in Amsterdam is a free-stanÂding builÂding with an airy appearance that invites the public to step inside. By focuÂsing on easing the tranÂsiÂtion between landÂscape and builÂding and breaÂking down the typiÂcally large scale of a pool accomÂmoÂdaÂtion, NoorÂderÂparkbad is emphaÂsized as a paviÂlion in the park.
The softly shaped volumes and curved rain curtain are the mediaÂtors between builÂding and park. Two stacked volumes deterÂmine the shape of the builÂding. By moving the upper volume to the rear the builÂding blends well with the scale of the park as well as the resiÂdenÂtial area. In addiÂtion, the setback enables the peneÂtraÂtion of daylight deep into the builÂding.
Wavy rain curtain
The wavy rain curtain is the most striking element of the NoorÂderÂparkbad. PrimaÂrily an educaÂtional element, it commuÂniÂcates how closely the swimÂming pool is connected to water.
On a rainy day, the water flows like a waterÂfall trickÂling down the curtain and lets the visitor see how rainÂwater becomes bathing water.
On sunny days the curtain shimÂmers like a congealed cascade, while on wintry days the ice crysÂtals transÂform the builÂding into an ice palace. Also, the curtain theaÂtriÂcally marks the entrances to the pool: it is pulled up and guides the visitor into the builÂding.
Family pool
The NoorÂderÂparkbad is the new public family pool for the north of Amsterdam and will serve an important social funcÂtion. The tradiÂtional theme of a bathÂhouse as a meeting place for the neighÂborÂhood is reflected in the atmoÂsphere of the inteÂrior. IntiÂmate enclosed spaces alterÂnate with high ceilings and skylights.
The wooden rhomÂboid roof consÂtrucÂtion and finishes of floor, ceiling and wall in tradiÂtional mateÂrials lends the builÂding a warm atmoÂsphere.

Sustainable design
The ambiÂtions concerÂning a sustainable design for the NoorÂderÂparkbad are very high and already taken into account from the layout of the floor plan.
Acting like a warm blanket, the seconÂdary funcÂtions are therÂeÂfore wrapped around the three halls of the various pools, which are heated to high tempeÂraÂtures.
Only the south facing elevaÂtions of these halls have no climate buffer, alloÂwing the sun to heat the space and visiÂtors to enjoy the beauÂtiful view over the park.
