Type sports halls for Berlin
As part of the school construction offensive, nine three-field halls for school and club sports were built in Berlin using modular, ecological timber construction. The aim of this investment project by the Senate Department for Education, Youth and Family is to create urgently needed sports facilities quickly, economically and to a high standard.
In addition, the modular timber construction method in standardized variants enables those responsible to meet the constantly growing and changing requirements for the implementation of urgently needed infrastructure facilities.
The halls were planned and built by scholl architekten partnerschaft from Stuttgart.

TSH60 and TSH199
The concept that emerged victorious from a realization competition in 2017 meets the high flexibility requirements with a modular structure in three usage zones: Hall, ancillary and equipment rooms. Two types of hall are created, which differ only in the width of the playing field and the span of the hall structure: TSH60 and TSH199.
The TSH60 type sports hall offers a total area of around 1,620m² and three hall sections, each with pitch dimensions of 22x45m. It has a gallery with seating for up to 60 spectators, barrier-free access and ancillary rooms for changing rooms, technical equipment, storage and administration. The space is complemented by a multi-purpose area with a kitchenette, which can also be opened up for non-sporting uses.
TSH199 is the larger version of the two type sports halls. It also comprises three hall sections, but with a grandstand for up to 199 people. It is also barrier-free and has identical side areas, but is more generously dimensioned with a total area of 1,950 m².

Bright and friendly
The concept takes into account the different conditions at various locations and allows for flexible, location-specific organization as well as barrier-free access to the adjoining rooms. The single-storey side room wings also allow for generous glazing on the long sides of the hall.
Thanks to this glazing and a translucent roof construction, the halls are bright and friendly. The equipment includes modern LED lighting, baffle walls made of laminated, (birch) veneered wood-based panels, high-quality sports floors and energy-efficient ventilation and heating technology.
Both types of hall are around seven meters high and are characterized by a wide-span, column-free load-bearing structure made of glulam.
To ensure rapid implementation with high quality workmanship, key components were prefabricated in the factory ready for surface finishing and delivered and installed just-in-time to the respective location. Standardization and standardization of the sports halls enable efficient planning, production and execution processes. This led to a short construction phase on site, which was of course ideal given the limited financial and time resources available.
The use of wood as a natural building material for the construction, building envelope and finishing is also a good decision in terms of ecology and sustainability. For functional and constructive reasons, the base of the building is made of prefabricated concrete elements, giving the adjoining rooms a restrained and elegant appearance in combination with simple finishing elements.

Lily Braun and Carl Friedrich von Siemens
The first nine type sports halls were built between 2021 and 2023 in this order:
- TSH60 Lily-Braun-Gymnasium, Berlin-Spandau
- TSH60 Carl-Friedrich-von-Siemens-Gymnasium, Berlin-Spandau
- TSH60 Schule am Stadtpark, Berlin-Steglitz
- TSH60 Vineta elementary school, Berlin-Mitte
- TSH60 Sportforum Berlin, Berlin-Lichtenberg
- TSH60 Bernd Ryke Primary School, Berlin-Spandau
- TSH60 Brodowin elementary school, Berlin-Lichtenberg
- TSH199 Kolumbus Primary School, Berlin-Reinickendorf
- TSH199 Sportschule-Olympiapark, Berlin-Charlottenburg
Thanks to the high degree of prefabrication of the timber elements, the actual assembly on site could be completed in only around ten weeks.
With the type sports halls and their continuous further development, Berlin is setting an example for sustainable construction: ecological, functional and flexible in use – for both school and club sports.

Light and glare protection
The requirements for the type sports halls also included natural lighting with ball-proof glare protection inside and out. The right solution for this was provided by an insulating glass with a translucent, light-diffusing capillary insert. It is called OKALUX K and ensures uniform and shadow-free illumination of the room interior with daylight without additional glare protection devices. This not only has a positive effect on the well-being of athletes, it also reduces energy costs.
For comfortable viewing during ball sports competitions such as basketball and volleyball, 74 heat-insulating panes are inserted into the vertically structured timber-aluminum P/R façade above the baffle walls along the entire length of the hall. In addition to the ball-proof properties of the glass, OKALUX K also impressed the architects with its customized design.
The durability, maintenance-free use and good recyclability of the selected insulating glass units also show that there is no contradiction between fast production times and quality.
Sports floors, baffle walls and installation elements
TOP-SPORT supplied and installed the sports floor, the wooden baffle walls and coordinated the installation of the partition curtains for the interior fit-out of the Berlin type sports halls. The sister company HERKULES-Schwebetore installed the built-in elements.
The approximately 1,145 m² polysport® UNO elastic sports floor with a PUR surface ensures safe stability, fast reactivity and even load distribution. This makes it ideal for school and team sports as well as roller sports.
The wooden baffle walls used consist of individually manufactured modules that meet all requirements for force reduction, ball impact resistance, acoustics and fire protection. The construction with vertical swing beams ensures the necessary safety, while the design with birch multiplex slats, skirting boards and clad installation elements creates a uniform appearance.
Signaling
The signage for the nine newly built type sports halls in Berlin was implemented by Virtuz GmbH, a specialist in guidance and orientation systems. The project included the complete interior and exterior signage and provides a consistent guidance system that supports everyday school life as well as club and event operations.
Particular emphasis was placed on a clear design, good legibility and durable materials so that orientation and safety are permanently guaranteed. The signage blends in with the architectural concept of the halls and contributes to a functional overall image that enables the different user groups to find their way around easily and intuitively.
Platform lifts
The HIRO A4 vertical platform lift is used in the type sports halls – a complete system with shaft, supplied and installed by the specialist HIRO LIFT from Bielefeld.
The A4 offers a vertically moving, cabin-free platform and requires neither a pit nor complex installation or conversion work. With its low-maintenance spindle drive, “A” energy certificate and flexible design, it offers a sustainable and comfortable solution for athletes, visitors and employees.
In sports halls in particular, where many people with different mobility needs come together, the lift creates short distances and a high level of safety. Thanks to the variable design options, it can also be harmoniously integrated into the architecture of the type sports halls: an important contribution to the future viability of the new hall types.
