The temporary sports hall in Albstadt

For the transition

NUSSLI

When the old sports hall has to be demolished but school lessons have to continue: In Albstadt, a modern temporary sports hall was built in just a few months for the coming years.

A pragmatic and clever solution – energy-efficient and future-oriented.

Genesis

The town of Albstadt in Baden-Württemberg (population 47,000) faced a challenge that will be familiar to many German municipalities: What to do when dilapidated school sports halls from the 1970s urgently need to be replaced and the new construction will take years?

The hall at Schlossberg Realschule had massive concrete damage and structural defects that made further use impossible and demolition unavoidable. So a replacement was needed so that school and club sports would not have to take a break: the temporary Albstadt sports hall.

The city was therefore looking for a pragmatic and functional interim solution for the next five to ten years that could be implemented quickly and at the same time meet all functional and other requirements.

The contract was awarded to NUSSLI.

Function

The temporary Albstadt sports hall measures 45 x 22 meters and has a pitched roof with a ridge height of 9.5 meters. The supporting structure consists of a robust steel construction clad with sandwich panels. A strip light provides natural lighting.

The ancillary rooms were arranged on the two long sides of the hall: On the west side there are equipment and storage rooms, on the east side changing rooms, toilets and showers, which are accessible via a corridor. These single-storey areas were constructed using prefabricated containers: They only had to be connected on site, which of course saved an enormous amount of time.

The decision to opt for a steel structure rather than an air dome, which is cheaper to purchase, pays off in the long term: Not only is it more durable, it also incurs significantly lower operating costs – a decisive advantage, especially given the current energy prices.

The temporary Albstadt sports hall can be divided into three equally sized areas with the help of partition curtains. The sports floor has floor sockets for sports equipment, basketball hoops and a fold-out wall bars.

Everything you need for modern school and club sports.

Blueprint

Thanks to its modular construction, the temporary sports hall in Albstadt was erected and put into operation in just six months.

The project is an example of how pragmatic solutions can overcome municipal challenges: With the temporary sports hall in Albstadt, the city is bridging the time until a new building is constructed without pupils or sports clubs having to give up their training facilities. The well thought-out design combines cost-effectiveness with functionality – a blueprint for other cities with similar problems.
