The Reginhardstrasse Sports Park in Berlin
Future-oriented
Ahner Landscape Architects, Polytan
The Reginhardstrasse Sports Park responds to our changing sports behaviour and creates new spaces for both our traditional sports, like football or athletics, as well as newer, individual forms of movement and togetherness.

From the sports field to the Reginhardstrasse Sports Park
The Reginhardstrasse Sports Park in Berlin-Reinickendorf is another successful example of transforming disused large playing fields into modern sports facilities. Behind this lies the need to further develop our traditional core sports facilities into modern, multifunctional, and well-equipped sports parks.
For athletics, the facility now offers a 400-metre circular track with two 110-metre sprint lanes, as well as shot put, high jump, long jump, and triple jump. A state-of-the-art full-size artificial turf pitch was created for football and American football.
Other special features include the structured integration of the curve segments tailored to today’s needs, a cross-training course, the option to store equipment on-site in containers, and a Teqball table.
The Reginhardstrasse Sports Park was designed by the landscape architecture firm Ahner Landschaftsarchitektur from Königs Wusterhausen, and the four-million-euro facility was commissioned by the Reinickendorf district office.
The main users are the neighbouring Bertha-von-Suttner-Gymnasium and the Gustav-Freytag-Oberschule.
Sports ground
During the construction of the Reginhardstrasse sports park, a special emphasis was placed on sustainability. This applies especially to the full-size pitch, the running tracks, and the shock-absorbing surface.
The existing base layer material was removed and reused for the construction of the substructure. The topsoil was removed, sifted, and then reinstalled at another location. The new artificial turf field also focuses on sustainability wherever possible: The filaments are made from sugarcane parts, which are derived from by-products of agricultural production, and from recycled plastics (PCR). The production is powered by 100% green electricity.
The result is a high-quality artificial turf field at the centre of the facility, which stands out not only for its functional features but also for its markings, making it suitable for both American football and football.
The pitch, running tracks, and shock-absorbing surface are supplied by Polytan.
Athletics track
A circular track, which was designed with a high-performance coating (Rekortan M) in brick red, extends around the playing field. This has already proven itself in many locations. Its elastic base layer and solid construction create optimal conditions for professional athletes, ambitious amateur sportspeople, as well as for school and recreational sports.
As a bonus, state-of-the-art technology has been integrated into the innermost running track and the middle sprint lane. This allows precise performance measurements and analyses in the areas of speed, endurance, and strength to be conducted via an app. Magnets installed in the facility capture movement data, which is recorded by a sensor on the athlete and analysed in the diagnostic software.
A very welcome side effect: The system contributes to the digitisation of school sports, as sprint and endurance times can be automatically recorded – the era of the stopwatch in the hands of the PE teacher is over in Reinickendorf.
Parkour obstacle course
A parkour obstacle course has been created directly adjacent to the running track. It is designed to promote physical activity as well as free running and other movement skills.
The parkour obstacle course at Reginhardstrasse Sports Park offers a variety of obstacles and elements that allow athletes and students of very different performance levels to develop and improve their skills in the areas of strength, dexterity, balance, coordination and spatial perception.
The parkour, like the curve segments of the running track, is equipped with a permeable, granular-coated, and durable shock-absorbing surface.
Curve segments
The two curve segments offer additional special features.
In the northern section, the high jump, long jump, and triple jump can be practiced. Directly adjacent, on the outer side of the running track, is a shot put facility for school and training use – as well as the Teqball table. Teqball is a very trendy racket sport played over a curved Teqball table, which combines football and table tennis.
In the opposite, southern section, a cross-training course with jump obstacles made of stainless steel has been installed. It can also be integrated into running training on the running track, providing a spectacular change of pace.
There are also two containers here, which can be used for storing sports equipment. This saves time and hassle.

Conclusion
The Reginhardstrasse Sports Park therefore incorporates many new developments in our sports habits and creates new spaces, both for our traditional sports such as football and athletics, as well as for newer, individual forms of movement and social interaction.
A key factor in the success of the project is its implementation with high-quality materials. This transforms user-friendly planning into a future-proof, exemplary facility.
