Adlerka in Bratislava
Vitalization
AT26 architects
The revitalization of the “Adlerka” sports complex is a fine example of the effect of combining sport, architecture and suitable materials: A neglected school area was turned into an open meeting place for exercise, encounters and leisure – and thus a lively impulse for public space and togetherness in Bratislava.

Centre
The sports facilities at the Karol Adler Secondary Technical School in the Dúbravka district of Bratislava were dilapidated, the school’s reputation was suffering and there was no sign of any meaningful use.
The aim of the redesign of Adlerka was therefore to transform the previously neglected school grounds into an attractive, accessible and versatile space. The project was commissioned by the City of Bratislava, with planning by AT26 architects.
The focus of the renovation was the new four-lane tartan running track, which surrounds a 90 x 45 meter soccer pitch. The pitch is equipped with floodlight masts and is complemented by various sports and recreation areas. Thanks to the outstanding quality and finish of the pitch and running track, a facility has been created here that is not only used during school lessons, but is also deliberately open to the local community – for children, young people and families from the neighborhood.
Design
The most striking design element are shipping containers in various locations and with different functions. A striking yellow container by the running track serves as a kiosk and storage area for sports equipment and also forms the supporting structure for the roof of the adjacent stand. The yellow color scheme can also be found on the players’ benches, logos and climbing wall handles, giving the facility a uniform, modern appearance.
Another three containers, this time anthracite-colored, are arranged on a circular yellow EPDM surface. They house checkrooms, storage rooms and public sanitary facilities. All around is an area for street workouts and a climbing wall, complemented by outdoor seating for relaxation and socializing.
More sports
In addition, various sports areas were renovated or extended to a high standard, including a long jump facility, a shot put area, tennis courts and a multifunctional playing field. New paths, barrier-free access and durable outdoor surfaces ensure a comfortable and safe flow of movement on the site.
The landscape design focuses on sustainability: new trees, flower beds and spacious green areas improve the climate and quality of stay.
Meeting point
Adlerka is now used for school activities in the mornings and is transformed into an open meeting place for the district in the afternoons and at weekends. The facility creates space for sport, play, recreation and informal social interaction – a lively added value for all generations.
Thanks to sport, architecture and materials.
