News from Upper Swabia

Markt Rettenbach is located in Upper Swabia, 20 kilometers from Memmingen and 20 kilometers from Mindelheim. The world seems to be in order here and the quality of life is enormous. Numerous sports activities, but also other clubs between carnival and alphorn blowers as well as pilgrimage routes contribute to this – and now there is also a new gymnasium.

It is located in the immediate vicinity of the primary and secondary school and the existing sports area and, as a solitary building and due to its elevated position on the northern edge of the town, plays a key role in shaping the townscape.

The design was created by Hrycyk Architekten from Munich.

Good looking

The Markt Rettenbach gymnasium impresses with its clear design language and consistent timber construction. Rough-sawn cladding made from local larch covers the closed surfaces, while smooth, planed façades accentuate the incisions.

Thanks to its successful integration into the landscape and surroundings, the Markt Rettenbach gymnasium is not only functional, versatile and good-looking, but also completely barrier-free.

Versatility

The entrance area is one storey above the hall level, at the level of the school and parking lot. It opens up with a continuous incision that serves as a covered forecourt and transition to the lower-lying outdoor sports areas.

Inside, the hall impresses with its well thought-out room layout, which allows for easy orientation and multiple uses. The foyer and corridor on the entrance level also function as a continuous grandstand to the sports hall.

The centrally located clubhouse with visitor toilets and covered outdoor seating offers space and opportunities for meetings.

The terrace area is complemented by a continuous balcony. It can also be used as a covered spectator area for the grass sports field, i.e. for soccer matches – after all, it is directly connected to the sports field.

The hall level with changing areas and equipment rooms is at the same level as the grass sports field and running track. Thanks to the direct access from the outside, the changing rooms can also be used by the footballers. A simple trick that sustainably increases the potential uses of the complex.

Hot water

Hot water is supplied decentrally via electric instantaneous water heaters. This system enables hot water to be provided directly at the respective tapping points as required – without long pipe runs or storage losses. This improves both energy efficiency and hygiene, as hot water is only produced when it is actually needed.

The system is supplemented by a water treatment system with a water softener from Grünbeck. This reduces the limescale content in the water using the ion exchange process and thus protects pipes, fittings and technical components from deposits in the long term. At the same time, it contributes to more economical operation, as less energy is required for heating and maintenance costs are reduced.

All in all, this is a modern, low-maintenance and energy-efficient solution for the sports hall’s sanitary areas that meets the requirements of both school and club sports.

The whole project was implemented by BayWa Haustechnik GmbH from Nesselwang.

Good investment

The project, which cost a good six million euros, was largely financed by grants. The money is well spent, as the hall expands the range of sports on offer, especially for children and young people, and promotes the integration of people with limited mobility. Since its official opening in 2025, the hall has often been full to bursting and is a lively meeting place for club and popular sports.

It also offers successful architecture with a high-quality finish.
