The district sports hall in Wangen
Does not interfere
Steimle Architects
Steimle Architekten wanted to create an atmospheric building with the Wangen district sports hall – one that “does not disturb”, even though it is larger than the previous hall. That worked out very well.
Versatility
The new district sports hall in Wangen replaces a 70-year-old hall on the same site, between two vocational schools on the edge of the old town. Wangen is located in the Allgäu region near Ravensburg. It is home to 27,000 people.
The new three-court sports hall impresses with its spacious yet modest architecture and its versatility of use. In addition to the hall, there are also two gymnastics rooms and a spacious cafeteria in the foyer, which are used not only by the 2,000 or so pupils, but also for school and other events.
The design was created by Steimle Architekten from Stuttgart/Überlingen and is the result of a competition held in 2020.
Reorganization
The guiding principle of the design is the urban reorganization of the area with radically few interventions. The new Wangen district sports hall was built on the site of the old hall, which meant that all the trees could be preserved.
With its foyer and cafeteria, the hall opens up to the west, north and east and thus to all neighboring uses such as the vocational school, town hall, grammar school and also to the historic old town of Wangen. Six large doors open the hall to the south onto the festival site, making it part of the outdoor events.
In the course of the 2024 State Garden Show, which took place in Wangen, this site took on a special significance.
Organization
The compact, two-storey cube of the Kreissporthalle Wangen is based on the rational aesthetics of the neighboring buildings in its design language, materiality and simplicity.
Between the three-bay hall in the south and the foyer in the north of the building are the ancillary rooms such as the kitchen, changing rooms, equipment rooms, control room, technology, storage and the two staircases to the upper floor. There are two large, almost square gymnastics rooms. For sports activities, the hall is also accessed via a side entrance to the east with short routes to the changing rooms on the upper floor.
Sun protection
The elegant wooden façade is complemented by a skylight strip that ensures even illumination with daylight. Ball-proof roller blinds were installed to protect against sunlight and glare. These are certified as ball-proof in accordance with DIN 18032 “Part 3 Ball impact safety test” and offer high-quality sun and glare protection as well as thermal insulation in summer.
Thanks to its metallized reverse side, the curtain, which is also certified, achieves the best values for thermal insulation in summer and therefore fits in perfectly with the sustainable concept of the Wangen district sports hall.
In order to meet the special requirements of the timber façade, the lateral drop rod guides of the roller blinds are embedded in the timber mullions. An attic also provides a special installation solution. In addition to the roller blind systems in the sports hall, electric roller blinds with cable tensioning are also installed in the gymnastics rooms.
All roller blinds are from Durach.
Lighting
The lighting in the Wangen district sports hall was specifically designed for sustainability, energy efficiency and user comfort. A circumferential skylight strip provides uniform daylight illumination of the hall, thus reducing the need for artificial lighting.
Modern LED strip lighting systems are used in the sports hall to ensure uniform and glare-free illumination. The luminaires are certified ball-proof and meet the requirements for school sports. The combination of energy-efficient LED technology and intelligent control significantly reduces power consumption.
The lighting concept and its implementation fit harmoniously into the sustainable overall concept, contribute to the pleasant atmosphere in the hall – and were supplied by emsLICHT.
Windows and doors
The window and door solutions also play a central architectural and functional role in the Wangen district sports hall. Large-format fixed glazing in wood (spruce) and high-quality wood-aluminum constructions were used, which provide both natural lighting and a warm material effect.
Particular attention was paid to the oversized pivot doors, the technical implementation of which posed a special challenge. The system is complemented by individually tailored external doors and effective sun protection that is tailored to the requirements of the daylight concept.
Fink Duo GmbH, an experienced company in the field of high-quality window and façade solutions, was responsible for installing the sophisticated construction elements.
Footprint
The district sports hall in Wangen was built using a timber hybrid construction method. The entire design and building concept is based on a climate-friendly and recyclable construction. It was realized with a view to a sustainable footprint in accordance with the guidelines for sustainable building of the district of Ravensburg and with the support of the Vorarlberg Energy Institute.
The implementation was based on a holistic approach and took into account criteria such as building ecology, biodiversity and near-natural construction. This included measures such as the use of regional building materials and native woods, the avoidance of pollutants, species protection on the building, the minimization of sealed surfaces and a green roof designed for biodiversity.
